EYE DISORDERS
ACUTE CONJUNCTIVITIS

What is conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is an eye disorder also known as “pinkeye”. It is an highly contagious inflammation of the conjunctiva.

What is the symptom of this eye disorder?

Most common symptoms are itchy eyes with secretions and the white part of the eyeball becomes pinkish or slightly red.

What is the cause of acute conjunctivitis?

It is caused by bacteria (haemophilus aegypticus) or virus, or by allergic, chemical or physical factors, such as rubbing eyes with unsanitary hands.

What is the Traditional Chinese Medicine’s perspective on this eye disorder?

TCM attributes acute conjunctivitis to pathogenic factors Wind and Heat, which are the basic factors to cause inflammation. If these pathogenic factors are not cleansed from the body and become excessive, an acute condition will become chronic conjunctivitis. Common causations include overindulgence in alcoholic beverage, deep-fried, or spicy food, overuse of the eyes, exposure to wind, poor lighting, inadequate sleep, and poor sanitation.

How can acupuncture treat acute conjunctivitis?

TCM treatment is directed toward dispersing and draining the Wind and Heat pathogenic factors from the body to reduce inflammation and stop itching. Circulation within the meridians traveling to the affected areas must be soothed to promote healing. It is advised to maintain clean hands by washing with warm water and soap. Depending on the condition and under medical supervision, optical saline solution might temporarily ease the itching and discomfort caused by acute conjunctivitis.

CATARACT (Without complications)

What is cataract and its etiology?

Cataract is an eye disorder where a cloudy area develops in the lens of the eye, blocking the passage of light from the lens to the nerve layer (retina) at the back of the eye, which may cause vision loss.

How does cataract develop?

Cataract can occur after an eye injury, eye disease, use of certain medications, or as a result of medical conditions such as diabetes. It is more common in older adults.

How do I cope with cataract?

Cataract does not always need to be removed, depending on the severity of the condition. The loss of vision caused by cataract without complications develops slowly and may not become severe. Most people can cope with the help of eyeglasses, contact lens, and other vision aids to delay or avoid surgery.

How can acupuncture treat the type of cataract without complications?

Acupuncture treatment for this disorder is directed at promoting Qi (energy) and blood circulation of the body, especially to the areas around the eyes. The blockage of the retina, is believed, due to the stagnation in the meridians of the local eye areas. The stagnation is easier to be broken down and removed once the circulation within the meridians is restored. Herbal therapy and biofeedback procedures might be utilized in conjunction with acupuncture.

MYOPIA

What is myopia?

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is an eye disorder which manifests as blurred vision. A nearsighted person’s distance vision is blurry and out of focus, making it difficult to see objects that are far away. Vision is better if objects are up close.

What is the symptom of myopia?

You should become alert if you experience squirting or frowning when trying to see clearly of distant objects. Myopia commonly begins in childhood or early teenage years, where students have difficulty reading the blackboard.

What is the cause and effect of myopia?

Myopia is caused by a natural variation in the length of the eyeball that makes it too long, so that it’s oval shaped rather than round. The effect of this variation is a refractive error that makes light rays entering the eye focus in the front part of the retina, causing troubled sight of distant objects. In normal vision, light focuses directly on the retina.

How do I cope with myopia?

Eyeglasses and contact lenses can usually help in correcting mild myopia. Recently, refractive surgery has become popular as a treatment option, which is done by changing the shape of the cornea.

How can acupuncture treat and correct myopia?

According to TCM perspective, myopia is caused by the inadequate or blocked circulation to the eye area, causing the tissues around the eyes to become malnourished and therefore leading to the dysfunction. Treatment principle is directed toward regulating the Qi (energy) and blood circulation in the channels around the eyes to restore normal vision.
