Acupuncture Therapy for
HYPERTENSION

What is hypertension and why is it a threat to my health?

Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, is defined as a repeatable blood pressure reading of greater than 150/90. Hypertension is usually a silent disease. Most people who have high blood pressure do not know it. When it is not treated properly, high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart disease, blindness, kidney failure or even death.

What are the causes of hypertension?

In more than 90% of the people with hypertension, the disorder has no identifiable cause, although risk is increased by excess weight, a high sodium level diet, a high cholesterol level, and a family history of high blood pressure.

What can I do to prevent hypertension?

For some people, dietary changes can lower blood pressure. Reduce the amount of salt intake and processed foods such as potato chips, canned sauce or soup, luncheon meat, etc. Look for the low-salt versions of these foods by reading their labels. Fit regular exercise into your schedule (walking is a good way to start), eliminate smoking, prevent excessive weight, and eliminate the consumption of alcohol and caffeine.

How can acupuncture treat hypertension?

More and more people with high blood pressure are seeking for an alternative treatment rather than the prescription drugs, since questions about the safety of these drugs is a main concern. Acupuncture is very effective in treating hypertension naturally by promoting the blood metabolism in our body, thus decrease blood viscosity and improve blood circulation, normalize blood pressure, and decrease blood sugar and lipid levels. It can also aid to dilate and strengthen blood capillaries to prevent stroke, which is a common risk factor of hypertension.
